Empathism is a literary, artistic, philosophical, and cultural movement emerged in Southern Italy in 2020. This movement aims to foster a collective artistic expression, moving away from individualistic approaches and emphasizing emotional intelligence and empathy. It also seeks to empower marginalized voices, particularly those from rural areas like Cilento (Epicenter of the same Movement).
Some of the key aspects of the “Empathic Movement”:
• Founded in Southern Italy:
The movement originated within the “New Cultural Triangle of Ancient Cilento,” an area that includes Omignano “The Aphorisms Village”, Salento “The Poetry Village”, and Vallo della Lucania “Set of Contemporary Arts Centre”.
• New Manifesto on the Arts:
The movement’s core principles are outlined in the “Empathic Manifesto,” written by Menotti Lerro and Antonello Pelliccia in 2018 and published in 2019 on the Literary Magazine ClanDestino and for Zona Publisher in 2020.
• Focus on Emotion and Emotional Intelligence:
Empathism aims to promote the arts through emotions and to enhance emotional intelligence through artistic expression.
• Emphasis on Community and Collaboration:
The movement encourages a more collaborative and less individualistic approach to art, fostering a sense of community among artists.
• Empowerment of Marginalized Voices:
Empathism seeks to give a voice to those who are often overlooked, particularly those in remote or mountainous areas.
• Cultural Pyramid of Cilento:
The movement has expanded beyond its initial Triangle to include 25 villages within the “Cultural Pyramid of Cilento,” each with a unique, new cultural identity.
• Unus – The Total Artist:
The idea of the “Total Artist” is also a key concept, symbolized by the new myth of Unus, a demigod whose death and fragmentation represent the historical separation of art forms that Empathism seeks to unite.
• Contemporary Arts Centre:
The movement is supported by the Centro Contemporaneo delle Arti in Cilento, which has played a key role in promoting its initiatives (seats of the Centre also in Milan and Rome for a while).
• The Cilento Poetry Prize:
In 2017 was created The Cilento International Poetry Prize which recognizes and promotes the main poets and artists both in Italy and abroad.
• Pre-Empathic period:
The period 2000/2020 is considered Pre-Empathic. The “Empathic Masters” of the Movement selected some pre-empathic predecessors:
- Poetry: Luciano Erba, Giovanni Raboni, Edoardo Sanguineti (M. Lerro)
- Narrative: Alberto Bevilacqua, Umberto Eco, Giuseppe Pontiggia (M. Lerro)
