SOCIETA’ DEMENTE
senza capire, per mio sommo scontento,
***
DERANGED SOCIETY
The politician is not the hero I favor In this vain and deranged society, But the ever-present shadow Of the struggling common man.
It is not the powerful nor the courtly magistrate, To whom life has given abundantly, But the diligent, humble, and unknown, Who spends his life amid the ford.
In this obtuse and inconsistent world, I feel like screaming at the top of my lungs And leaving it to the impertinent chance To shuffle the cards in a frenzy.
But stronger than everything is passion Which keeps my warrior spirit alive, Which grips my heart and, against my will, Urges me to face every challenge.
So I spend my life persistently Gathering shards and disappointments, Without understanding, to my great discontent, The ephemeral duration of every action. Translated by Franca Colozzo
